Ansfelden, 8 October 2026. – For companies in Austria’s border regions, a customer in Bavaria can be closer than one at home. This is exactly where GLS Austria comes in: Since 1 July 2026, selected customers have been able to ship parcels to Germany via direct cross-border routes. Delivery throughout Germany takes place within 24 hours – at domestic rates.
Economic ties between Austria and Bavaria are strong: In 2025, Austrian companies exported goods worth around EUR 19 billion to Bavaria – an increase of 8.1 percent year on year. Bavaria once again ranked as the largest market for Austrian exports.*
Short routes to Bavaria
“For businesses in border regions, speed and cost matter more than where the border runs. If a customer in Bavaria is closer than one in eastern Austria, the shipping solution should reflect that,” emphasises Christian Schöninger, Managing Director GLS Austria.
Direct access to the German network
GLS uses direct connections between Austrian and German locations. GLS feeds shipments from selected customers into the German network in a way that allows them to be transported onward like domestic parcels. This reduces the number of sorting and handling stages and enables nationwide delivery in Germany within 24 hours at domestic rates.
The direct routes include Ansfelden – Passau, Anthering – Erding, Rankweil – Wangen and Zirl – Erding. Fewer interfaces along the transport route also reduce the risk of misrouting. The specific handling process is tailored to each customer’s shipping requirements.
Sales across borders
When it comes to accessing the German market, GLS Austria and GLS Germany are also working more closely together. The teams in Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Salzburg coordinate directly with their southern German counterparts on selected customer accounts.
“The new solution is particularly relevant for e-commerce and marketplace sellers with a high share of shipments to Germany. Short transit times and reliable scan times are especially important for them,” says Eberhard Thiele, Director Sales & Customs GLS Austria. “We align pickup arrangements and loading units with the actual processes at the customer.”
