GLS prepares for the Games:
Anticipation, innovation and flexibility
June 06, 2024 | Paris, France
Paris, June 6, 2024 - As we are 50 days away from the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, GLS is on the starting blocks to guarantee uninterrupted delivery services despite the logistical challenges presented by this international event and estimates to 1 million packages delivered by its teams during the Games.
An Agile and Innovative Organization
In response to the challenge posed by the Games for the delivery professions, GLS wanted to act proactively and offer an innovative logistics system to ensure reliable and efficient deliveries to its customers throughout the Games period. GLS is committed to maintaining optimal service levels despite expected disruptions on the roads and in urban centers. Its distribution network is designed to quickly adapt to traffic changes and transit restrictions. Above all, its innovative technological solutions make it possible to limit these impacts.
Minimal Impact on Inbound Freight
Despite the challenges of reducing major highways to Paris, GLS assures that this will have little impact on inbound freight. Road transport to Paris will mainly take place at night, while diversions will be put in place to maintain a regular delivery flow. Road transport to Paris will normally take place at night and road transport from Paris will be diverted to the A104. A dedicated team will follow all summer, in real time, any traffic adjustments, instructions from the authorities, in conjunction with the various decision-making bodies.
Collection and Deliveries in Paris
To guarantee punctual deliveries in Paris, GLS implements specific measures: the objective is to arrive in Paris sufficiently early. Initiatives such as nighttime Pre-Picking from Vitry and stopping picking at 6:00 a.m. in Grand Garonor and Gennevilliers will help optimize delivery operations. Additionally, deliveries will be scheduled avoiding peak times to minimize delays.
A whole range of tools
In addition to basic traffic monitoring measures, GLS will optimize its complementary solutions to adapt to possible logistical obstacles. The use of its relay networks (Mondial Relay, Lockers GLS and Voisins Relais PickMe) will be crucial in the system. GLS is launching its new lockers in Paris on this occasion, in particular with its partner Quadient. The use of the bicycle delivery network and CityHubs will be intensified during the delivery period The fifteen tours per day by bike, planned in the Olympic restricted areas, and the use of real-time tracking services will offer increased flexibility to customers and guarantee successful delivery, even in the event of disruptions.
Regular Communication and Monitoring
Indeed, GLS's advantage in this period is its advance in the use of tracking tools and permanent interaction between the individual customer and the delivery people. GLS can keep its customers informed every step of the way. SMS notifications will be sent before each delivery, and real-time tracking of the delivery person's progress will be available for all FlexDeliveryService deliveries. On the day of delivery, the recipient has geolocated tracking on mobile . In the event of an unforeseen event and/or due to access restrictions linked to the Olympic Games, he/she can change his/her delivery method directly, up to the last minute . This service is available, beyond Paris, everywhere in France.
