GLS delivers parcels emission-free
GLS starts with fully sustainable parcel distribution in four Dutch city centres - emission-free and quiet. Electric vehicles are deployed in Apeldoorn, The Hague, Utrecht and Zwolle. GLS is also strengthening its commitment to the environment by participating in the Lean & Green programme.
GLS is deploying electric vehicles in four city centres, to replace the previously used diesel vans. With a fully charged battery, the eVans can cover around 120 kilometres. This is sufficient for complete tours from the GLS depots near the delivery areas, where the vehicles' batteries are charged overnight.
GLS first invested in setting up the charging infrastructure to ensure climate-friendly deliveries with eVans. Although the vehicles have less loading capacity and a shorter range compared to diesel vans, the development of a 'green' vehicle fleet is an important part of GLS’ environmental protection activities. GLS has planned to use significantly more electric vehicles.
Joining the Lean & Green initiative
GLS Netherlands has also been participating in Connekt's Lean & Green non-profit initiative since November 2019 to further complete its commitment to the environment. GLS aims to be awarded with a Lean & Green star. The corresponding goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 20 percent within a maximum of five years.

New depot in Amsterdam
Construction has started: the modern, sustainable GLS depot will more than double parcel handling capacity compared to the current location.
With the new construction in Atlas Park, Port of Amsterdam, GLS is preparing itself for ongoing growth in parcel numbers. The distribution hall will increase to 6,200 square metres, and the number of loading and unloading gates to 140. The overall concept is designed for fast, efficient processes. Part of that is the state-of-the-art sorter.
Focus on the environment and staff
To minimise environmental impacts, solar panels on the roof and a heat-pump system for heating will be installed. There will also be charging stations for electric vehicles.
The advantages for the more than 200 personnel on site: a new staff canteen, bigger offices, a modern ParcelShop, lots of daylight in the distribution hall and improved ergonomics for drivers when loading and unloading their vans and trucks.

FlexDeliveryService now connects 21 countries
Bulgaria, Finland, Italy, and Portugal have recently been added to the international FlexDeliveryService. The number of countries connected across border via the service thus rises to 21.
Web shops and their customers, in particular, benefit from the international connection via the service, as delivery according to the recipients' choice round off a shopping experince abroad. No matter in wich of the affiliated countries online shoppers order goods - GLS will inform them about the delivery in their native language.
Delivery according to choice
Depending on the country in question, recipients will then have various options to manage the time and location of their delivery. GLS or the network partner in the country adapts flexibly to the needs of recipients. This includes, for example, parcel delivery on a desired day, forwarding to a different addres or the delivery to a selected ParcelShop.
A pan-European service
In addition to the 21 countries connected in all directions, the FlexDeliveryService has already been set up for export parcels to Greece. GLS is preparing to connect further countries.
