Celebrating the Power of Women at GLS

In honour of International Women's Day, we sat down with four incredible women at GLS: Nancy, Karine, Katerina, and Cecilia. Their journeys reflect the strength, resilience, and determination that women bring to the workplace, and their insights shed light on the progress and challenges that still lie ahead. While their stories are central, the male perspective on the importance of gender equality in the workplace is also valuable, which is why we spoke with Cory and Kyle too.

Breaking Barriers: Personal Journeys of Resilience and Strength

Each of the women we spoke to has a unique journey, filled with challenges they overcame through perseverance, confidence, and a commitment to excellence.

Nancy, now Director of Customer Experience, began her career at GLS in 1995 as a Customer Service Agent. Reflecting on her early years, Nancy recalls “I faced challenges in pursuing roles initially perceived as more suited to men, but I persevered and continuously demonstrated my capabilities.”

Similarly, Karine, who now serves as a Terminal Manager, started as a Route Supervisor. She remembers the difficulties she faced with male colleagues early on in her career. However, Karine’s approach helped her break through these challenges. “At first, it wasn’t easy working with the drivers, but it’s all about how you speak and interact with others,” she explains.

Katerina, Director of Business Development, describes her career as dynamic and rewarding, but it hasn’t been without its obstacles. “The transportation industry is fast-paced, but there is a place for women to lead and drive change,” Katerina explains.

Finally, Cecilia, a Driver and Warehouse Employee, brings a fresh perspective on the challenges women face in transportation. She acknowledges the positive changes happening in the industry but also notes “There is a long way to go to attract more women to get behind the wheel.”

The Evolving Landscape: Positive Shifts in the Transportation Industry

The women at GLS have witnessed a shift in the transportation industry—once a male-dominated field—but they agree that while progress has been made, there's still work to do.

“There’s definitely more awareness of the importance of diversity and inclusion, and I’ve seen more women in visible roles,” says Nancy. “We must continue our efforts to create a more equitable and inclusive environment for women in all areas of transportation.”

Cecilia echoes this sentiment, saying, “While there’s been a positive shift in the way women are treated in the transportation industry, there are still many opportunities for women to fill roles that have historically been male-dominated.” Her comment highlights both the progress made and the challenges that remain for women.

We must continue our efforts to create a more equitable and inclusive environment for women in all areas of transportation.

What Role Do Men Play in Supporting Gender Equality at Work?

Men have an important role in fostering gender equality in the workplace. Cory, EVP of Business Development at GLS Canada, explains, “Men play a crucial role in fostering gender equality by being allies—advocating for equal opportunities, challenging biases, and ensuring women’s voices are heard in meetings and decision-making.” He continues, “In logistics and transportation, where the industry has traditionally been male-dominated, men can make a difference by mentoring female colleagues, promoting a culture of respect, and actively supporting a level playing field.”

Kyle, VP of Operations, adds to this, “It’s not just about women’s rights, but also about creating a more fair and just society for all genders. It’s well documented that a diverse workforce brings unique perspectives, fostering creativity, innovation, and better product development.”

By taking on the role of active allies, men help drive progress and create a more inclusive and equitable work environment for everyone.

Empowering Advice for Aspiring Leaders

The women at GLS offered powerful words of wisdom to women who aspire to grow within their roles.

Nancy shared a quote from Marilyn Monroe: “A wise girl knows her limits, a smart girl knows she has none.” She encourages women to embrace their ambitions and believe they are capable of anything.

Karine's advice is simple, but impactful: “Be determined and trust your gut.”

Katerina stressed the importance of resilience and confidence. “Speak up, take on challenges, and do not hesitate to push boundaries. Surround yourself with mentors and allies who support your growth,” she says.

Cecilia offered practical guidance: “Make decisions in all areas of your life—business, family, and most importantly, yourself. Lead by example and stay true to your values.”

Speak up, take on challenges, and surround yourself with supportive mentors.

International Women’s Day: Reflecting on Progress and Celebrating Achievements

For the women at GLS, International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate, reflect, and honour the incredible contributions women have made throughout history. It's also an opportunity to acknowledge the progress that has been made toward gender equity and recognize the work still ahead.

The day highlights the strength, kindness, and resilience that women bring to the workplace and the world. International Women’s Day is our chance to honour the contributions women make and ensure that women, particularly in once male-dominated fields, feel valued and encouraged to continue pursuing their passion.
